Has Your Kitchen Sink Sprung a Leak?

Life is full of surprises, and some of those little surprises include something going wrong with the house. It is part of life! The only thing you can do is roll with the punches and know what to do when little things like a leaking sink throw a wrench in your day. Here’s what to do if you discover a leak that threatens to become a real problem if you don’t take immediate action.

1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. This is usually directly under the sink. If you shut off the hot and cold valves and it is still leaking, you will need to shut off the water main to your house. This is typically next to or above your water heater.
2. Next, you will want to find what is leaking. Is there a crack in the pipe leading to the sink? Is the drain seal nice and tight? Check the supply lines—are they loose or cracked?
3. If you are unsure where the water is coming from, use a towel to dry everything off. Wrap a paper towel around your pipe and the supply lines. Turn on the water and see what part gets wet. If the towels stay dry, but you see water, it could be around the drainage area.
4. If you are comfortable with a little DIY, you can replace a supply line pretty easily. The PVC pipe isn’t a big job, and you can do it in a single day.
5. If you can’t find the source of the leak or are concerned it may be in the wall, you are best off calling a plumber to investigate.
