How to Take Care of Your Garage Floor
With the spring cleaning fever right around the corner, it is a great time to start thinking about giving your garage floor a little care and attention. It is something we rarely think about as we cart boxes in and out, drive our cars in and store away our tools. However, to keep that garage floor in good condition, you will want to give it a good cleaning now and then. Our team at Greenwood Hardware has a few tips to help you restore your garage floor and make it look like new once again!
- Your first step is going to be clearing everything out of the garage. This is a perfect time to get rid of some the clutter with a garage sale or making a donation to your favorite charity. For those things you will need to hold onto, there are plenty of ways to store them in the garage in a neat, orderly fashion.
- Once the floor is exposed, it is time to sweep it out. You can use a standard broom, but a push broom will save you some time and energy. While you are sweeping out the garage, take a few minutes to put a strip of duct tape over any outlets that are close to the ground. You’ll want to keep out any debris that is stirred up in the sweeping process as well as what’s to come.
- Now, it is time to wash the concrete. You can use a concrete cleaning solution or a little bit of powdered laundry detergent and hot water. Pour the solution into a bucket. You’ll want to wash a section at a time. You will need a scrub brush for this part. Pour some of the hot, soapy water onto the floor and scrub. Let it soak for about ten minutes and then repeat the process.
- Rinse the soapy mixture away with a garden hose and a spray nozzle. Make sure you stand at the back of the garage and spray towards the street.
- If you have stubborn oil stains, you can use the same ingredients you used to wash the floor, but you’ll want to make it with a 1:1 ratio to create a thick paste. Put the paste on the oil stain, allow it to sit for ten minutes and then scrub. You can also find specialized cleansers to tackle those tough stains.
- If you have rust stains, you can use some oxalic acid and water or buy a cleaning solution designed for rust removal.
