Your Pacific Northwest Home Purging Tips
Some psychologists believe that a person with a cluttered home probably has a cluttered mind. Whether this is true or not is hard to prove, but most people feel better when their spaces are clutter-free and organized. If you’ve been looking around at your home thinking that it’s time to purge some of the stuff and make more room for yourself, you’re not alone. These days, people realize that by lessening the load and getting rid of some stuff, they can enjoy their lives more. Home purging, after all, is a relatively simple way to add square footage to an existing home space.
But how do you go about a major Home Purge? First, you’ll want to identify some of the spaces and items that need to be de-cluttered. For example, a master bedroom closet may be overflowing with boxes, old clothes that you never wear, and perhaps stashed items that just never found a better place elsewhere. The best way to dive into a space like this is to first identify those things that you still need. Don’t ask yourself what you want, but rather, identify those items that you still use regularly and set them to the side, perhaps in another room.
Next, pull out items that have sentimental value and set these to the side. Sentimentality is subjective though. Don’t get carried away! Your 30-year-old daughter’s baby clothes may bring back memories for you, but if they have no real value or function in your current life, you need to ask yourself why you’re keeping them. Imagine someone else using those baby clothes and feeling grateful to have them! Consider donating some of the less-sentimental items that have no real function in your life rather than allowing them to take up space in your home. If all you ever see of these “sentimental items” is the box that they’re stashed in, then it’s probably time for them to go.
After you’ve set aside the functional items and the sentimental things that you simply can’t get rid of, designate space for the following piles for the other things: Recycle, Donation, Trash, and Other. The “Other” pile is for things that you borrowed from your sister or something you know that your friend would love. Once you’ve designated space for these categories of things, start sorting.
After you’ve finished sorting things, you can stand back and take a look at all that square footage and decide how to better organize it.
