Your Home Maintenance “To Do” List for Spring in Seattle
Spring is an important month for home maintenance. Don’t neglect your biggest investment because the spring weather can add stress to your home! The exterior of your home will be the focus during the spring months. Below are the most important things you can do to care for your property before summer arrives:
- Inspect the exterior of the house for issues such as chipping paint or siding damages. If you have a brick home, check to see if there are any holes in the brick. Look closely at the foundation of the house to see if there are any cracks. Take some silicone caulking in a caulking gun with you on your inspection and caulk any windows that have weathered to the point of needing extra sealant.
- Check the drainage. Make sure that the gutters of your home are clean and positioned properly so that water will flow away from your house. If water tends to stand in areas around your home for more than 24 hours at a time, you may want to consider putting in some pavement in the problem areas to get the water to drain away from the
- Repair any damaged window screens to keep insects out of the house. Buy new screens rather than using duct tape. Duct tape can work in a pinch, but it damages the aesthetics of the home.
- Clean out flower beds and gardens. Remove dead plants and debris from the winter months. This is also a good time to trim trees if you neglected to do this task in the fall. Wayward trees branches can sometimes cause damage to the exterior of the home if they aren’t properly pruned. Get some loppers to make quick work of branches that are 1” or less in diameter. Also, note any tree branches that are growing toward or into power lines. Have these professionally trimmed, if necessary.
- Inspect the roof of your house for damage or leaks and make the necessary repairs. Roof damage, when caught early can be an easy fix. If you neglect to do your spring maintenance tasks and roof problems get out of control though, they can cause much bigger problems later that are much more difficult and expensive to fix.
