Ceiling fans can help circulate the heat in a room, pushing it back down into the living space. This can save you money on your heating bill. It works just the opposite in the summer time, but still saves money on your cooling bill. You can head to the nearest hardware store and pick out the right fan for the space. 1. Turn off the electricity to the light fixture or existing ceiling fan at the breaker panel. Make sure it is off! You can use a circuit tester to make sure there is no electricity flowing.
  2. Unscrew any screws that are holding the fixture in place. You will need to hold the fixture with one hand while you disconnect the wires. Remove any other mounting screws.
  3. Once you have removed the old fixture, test the box to make sure it is secure. Ceiling fans can be heavy. You will definitely want to mount the fan to a stud or beam. The electrical housing box should be attached to a beam in most cases.
  4. Check to ensure the box is grounded and capable of holding the weight of your fan. This information is usually found inside of the electrical box.
  5. Follow the instructions that came with your fan to mount the motor base to the electrical box. Pay close attention to the wiring scheme. You will want to make sure the wires are nice and tight. Use wire nuts as needed. You may need a second pair of hands to hold the fan up while you take care of attaching the wires.
  6. Attach the fan base with the screws that should have been included in the box.
  7. Add the blades per manufacturer’s instructions.
  8. Turn the breaker on and test your fan.
