Spring To Do List for Your Seattle Yard
It’s the middle of April and that means it’s time to get your yard ready for the beauty of another Seattle spring! Though you may not be able to really dig into the garden or do heavy landscaping this early in the year, you can still do some light prep work to bring out the best in your lawn, garden, and the existing landscaping.
By taking the time to clean and prepare your yard for the upcoming spring and summer season you can enhance the existing lawn, garden, and landscaping to get eye-catching results from it when summer comes. In April, you can rake the lawn to remove dead leaves, branches, and other debris that you might not have been able to remove in the fall. In the spring, raking away excess debris allows the grass underneath to breathe and get plenty of sunlight. This boost of fresh air and sunlight will give it a real boost in early spring when the growing season starts.
Take a close look at your lawn as you rake and note any weeds that might be starting to germinate. Weeds are a problem for all homeowners! Weed seeds can find their way into your grass via the wind, a lawnmower, or birds. Using an herbicide, you can tackle the weeds early so that you can spend more time enjoying a beautiful lawn later on during the summer months.
Early spring is also a good time to check that in-ground sprinkler systems are working. Once the cold season is past and there’s no danger of freezing, you can check the pipes and faucets on the sprinkler system and make sure they’re all in working order for spring and summer. At the same time, you can pull the lawnmower out of the garage along with the weed trimmer and garden hoses to check that they’re all functioning properly and ready for the growing season.
Finally, once the ground has thawed completely, you can start preparing the garden for summer plants. Don’t dig up the soil this time of the year, but rather, spread compost or manure over the topsoil and clean up the bed and border of the garden by removing debris. Inspect the garden for pests and take care of them now. Now would be a good time to buy or order bulbs and seeds.
