Summer is a Great Time to Check Heating and Cooling Systems in your Home

Summer is a Great Time to Check Heating and Cooling Systems in your Home If June and July are any indication, we are in for a hot one this summer season! If you are one of the fortunate homes that have a cooling system installed, you are probably already running it. Many homes use a heat pump or a combination furnace and air conditioner. Spring is a great time of year to make sure your heating and cooling system is in good shape. Our folks at Greenwood Hardware have what you need to take care of some of the minor, do-it-yourself maintenance that will keep your unit in good, running condition.

Filters

One of the easiest and most important parts of your cooling system maintenance is the filter changes. The wind blows all kinds of stuff into the filters, as does typical use. Imagine if you never dusted, swept or vacuumed. You know that fine layer of dust you get? Well, that is collecting on your filters and clogging them up. You will end up paying more money on your electric bill if you are trying to run your heating and/or cooling system with dirty filters. Some filters are quickly changed out, while others require you to remove and clean with a hose. You can ask your HVAC tech what kind you have when you have your annual maintenance.

Outdoor Coils

Check the unit outside. Are there a bunch of weeds or tall grass around the unit? If so, you need to remove the weeds and any other debris that may be interfering with the unit’s air flow. You can use a special vent brush to get out any debris that is stuck in the grid. It is important you use a special brush to avoid bending the vanes on the unit. A blower can also be used to help clear out any dust and dirt that may be clinging to the coil.

Window Units

Window units should also be inspected and cleaned before you turn it on this summer. Clean the filter and replace if needed. You can typically run the front grate under the shower or spray it off with the garden hose to remove any dirt. A clean AC will keep you cooler without running up the electric bill. It will also last longer if you keep it regularly maintained.

Stay cool this summer and stay on top of your heating and cooling unit maintenance. When it breaks, it can be very costly to repair. Head into Greenwood Hardware to pick up hoses, spray nozzles, filters and anything else you need to clean your system. Come on in, or contact us today.
